City Hall News: Week of August 17, 2025
ELKINS, W.Va. — August 16, 2025 — The City of Elkins reminds residents that starting next month, September 2025, they will see a change in curbside trash collection rules as the City implements its first-ever garbage bag limit. Approved by City Council on Thursday, June 25, Ordinance 345 amends Chapter 50 of the Elkins City Code, setting the following bag limits for weekly curbside pickup:
- Twelve (12) 13-gallon kitchen bags, or
- Six (6) 30-gallon large trash bags, or
- Three (3) 55-gallon contractor bags.
Labor Day is Monday, September 1. City Hall’s offices will be closed that day.
The City’s Sanitation Department will also be closed on Labor Day. Monday’s regularly scheduled trash pickup will occur the following morning, Tuesday, Sep. 2.
The City’s Sanitation Department announces that for August and September 2025, the free monthly bulk item pickup (one large item, such as an appliance, TV, or mattress) schedule is as follows:
For August 2025:
- Wednesday weekly trash pickup: Wednesday, August 20
- Thursday weekly trash pickup: Thursday, August 28
- Friday weekly trash pickup: Friday, August 29
- *Friday’s bulk pickup will be one week later than the usual monthly schedule*
For September 2025:
- Monday weekly trash pickup: Wednesday, Sep. 3
- *Monday’s bulk pickup for September will be two days later because of Labor Day.
- Tuesday weekly trash pickup: Tuesday, Sep. 9
- Wednesday weekly trash pickup: Wednesday, Sep. 17
- Thursday weekly trash pickup: Thursday, Sep 25
- Friday weekly trash pickup: Friday, Sep. 26
This free service is for ONE ITEM only, such as an appliance, mattress, or piece of furniture.

The following committees meet next week:
Finance: Monday, August 18, 1:00 p.m. at the Phil Gainer Community Center. Items of business include: a discussion on the City’s current pay structure and potential next steps for addressing compensation; proposed compensation adjustment of Elkins Police Officers; funding to replace a “Welcome to Elkins” sign destroyed in accident; request for City contribution to Babe Ruth League for projects at Bluegrass Park; a request for the City’s contribution toward utility bills at All Veterans Park; and a request for City funding of a private vendor’s services to set up and remove the community Christmas tree.
Historic Landmarks Commission: Tuesday, August 19, 4:00 p.m. at the Darden House, 421 Davis Avenue, Suite 1, Elkins, WV. The agenda has not been announced as of press time.
Elkins Parks and Recreation Commission (EPRC): Wednesday, August 20, 5:00 p.m. at the Phil Gainer Community Center. Items on the agenda include a Mon Forest Towns project; reviewing updated park rules; and a communication board for Glendale Park.
The next Elkins City Council meeting will occur on Thursday, August 21, at 7:00 p.m. The agenda should be published online early next week.
