EFD Accepting Applications for Entry-Level Firefighters Through Aug. 21

ELKINS, W.Va. — Aug. 3, 2026 — The Elkins Fire Department (EFD) is seeking candidates for entry-level appointment to the ranks of paid, civil-service firefighters. Although there are currently no immediate openings, the department is accepting applications from Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 21, at 4 p.m., to establish a list of eligible candidates for future vacancies.

Interested applicants must complete a rigorous selection process that includes a written exam, a physical agility test and interviews, all scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12. Applicants who successfully pass both the written and physical portions will earn a spot on an eligibility list and may be considered for employment as positions become available.

“The physical agility test is demanding by design, as it simulates the conditions our firefighters face on the job,” said Fire Chief Steve Himes. “We are looking for individuals who are not only physically prepared but also committed to serving our community with courage and dedication.”

Prospective applicants are encouraged to review an overview of the recruitment process and watch a demonstration of the required physical agility test on the City of Elkins’ website:

Interested candidates can view the job listing and apply here: https://cityofelkinswv.gov/employment. Upon completing the online application, candidates will receive a study guide for the written test by email.
