Help Protect Elkins’ Water & Environment: Join Our Team as a Wastewater Operator

Elkins is seeking a Wastewater Plant Operator-In-Training (OIT). Under close supervision, the OIT will perform skilled technical and manual work in the daily operation and maintenance of the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.  Work involves monitoring, adjusting and recording plant operations, performing maintenance on equipment and facilities, and performing related work as required. Work also involves responding to emergencies: The OIT is required to work weekends and holidays and perform 24 hour “on call” emergency service.

This position will report to the Wastewater Superintendent/Chief Operator.

What You’ll Do, as in Core Responsibilities:

  1. Operations & Maintenance:
  • Monitor, adjust, and operate equipment (pumps, blowers, clarifiers, grinders, etc.).
  • Perform preventive maintenance, minor repairs, and calibrations.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical/technical issues (e.g., cleaning bar screens, adjusting belts).
  1. Process Control & Compliance:
  • Regulate chemical rates and sludge dewatering processes.
  • Collect/prepare water/sewage samples for lab analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, health, and environmental regulations.
  1. Documentation & Reporting:
  • Record meter/gauge readings and maintain operational logs.
  • Prepare reports (e.g., equipment readings, maintenance records).
  1. Emergency & On-Call Duties:
  • 24/7 on-call availability for urgent operational issues.
  1. Equipment & Facility Management:
  • Operate heavy machinery (dump trucks, loaders, tractors) and tools.
  • Receive/store chemicals; maintain vehicles/equipment.
  • Assist with grounds/building upkeep.
  1. Communication & Collaboration:
  • Report major issues to supervisors.
  • Coordinate with teams, labs, and the public.
  • Attend training for skill enhancement.

Who We’re Looking For 

  • Someone with a strong work ethic, technical aptitude, and a commitment to safety.
  • A problem-solver who can also handle physical tasks (lifting 5 to 80 pounds, climbing, and working in confined spaces).
  • A high school diploma or GED is required; must also have a valid driver’s license and possess a valid Class A or B DCL License upon employment.
  • A valid Class I Wastewater Certification must be completed within one year of employment.
