City Hall News: Week of August 23, 2026

The City of Elkins reminds residents to sign up for local emergency alerts, especially as periods of stormy weather continue. The city is also accepting applications for several job openings.

No city council, committee or board meetings are currently scheduled for next week. The next regular meeting of Elkins City Council is Thursday, September 3 at 7 p.m. at the Phil Gainer Community Center.

First-due fire fees are due September 3. Utility shutoffs for nonpayment of past-due utility bills are also scheduled for September 3.

Recent storms and heavy rainfall underline the importance of having more than one way to receive timely information during severe weather and other emergencies. Residents and business owners are encouraged to sign up for alerts. In addition to urgent or emergency notices, City alerts also include information about water outages, street closures, weather-related service changes, and other time-sensitive local information. Learn more and sign up at cityofelkinswv.gov/city-government/alert-center/.

The City of Elkins is accepting applications for several positions, including Chief of Police, Municipal Court Clerk, Parking Enforcement/Animal Officer, and Water Technician I, II or III. Application information is available at cityofelkinswv.gov/departments/human-resources/employment-opportunities/.

To help police, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel quickly locate homes and businesses during emergencies, the City offers residents and business owners free reflective address numbers. Decals may be picked up at the Finance Department at the WV Wood Tech Center, 10 11th Street, Suite 3, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents are also reminded that the city’s recycling drop-off site at 1 Baxter Street accepts glass and yard waste only. Household trash, boxes, plastic ties, twine, and other materials should not be left at the site. These and other prohibited materials can damage equipment at the composting facility that accepts the city’s yard waste and could cause that service to be terminated. More information is available at www.cityofelkinswv.gov/community/recycling/.

You can view or subscribe to notifications concerning upcoming meeting dates, times and agendas here: www.cityofelkinswv.gov/agenda-center.
