Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco Elected Secretary of the West Virginia Municipal League Board of Directors

Elkins W. Va., August 30, 2024: Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco was elected Secretary of the West Virginia Municipal League (WVML) Board of Directors at the league’s annual meeting this month in Huntington. Marco is the first Elkins mayor to serve as a WVML officer. His election is significant for both the city of Elkins and the broader community of West Virginia municipal governments.

The WVML Board of Directors is instrumental in guiding the organization’s mission of enhancing good government and quality of life across West Virginia’s cities, towns, and villages. The Board’s primary focus is on bolstering the capacity of municipal governments and advocating for the communities they serve. As Secretary, Mayor Marco will play a critical role in supporting this mission, contributing to strategic direction and decision-making and representing the League in a variety of settings.

The four-member Executive Committee, which Mayor Marco now joins, is elected by representatives from member cities and comprises key leaders from West Virginia’s municipal governments. This group oversees the work of the Board and the WVML, ensuring that the organization effectively advocates for and supports municipal interests at both the state and federal levels.

In his new role, Mayor Marco will be tasked with not only assisting in overseeing the Board’s administrative functions but also advocating for the needs and concerns of West Virginia cities. This includes engaging with legislative bodies and administrative agencies to influence processes and policies impacting municipal governance.

“I am honored to be elected Secretary of the WVML Board of Directors,” said Mayor Marco. “This position presents a tremendous opportunity to collaborate with fellow municipal leaders and work towards initiatives that benefit all our communities. I look forward to contributing to the League’s efforts to strengthen municipal governance and lift up our cities and towns.”

WVML Executive Director Susan Economou says she looks forward to working with Mayor Marco in this new capacity.

“Working as a team, the Board’s Executive Committee is crucial to assisting with the League’s mission of furthering effective and collaborative leadership within municipal government,” she says. “Mayor Marco’s experience, dedication, and ability to build strong relationships will be invaluable as he assumes this influential role.”
