City Hall News: Week of September 6, 2026

City of Elkins offices will be closed Monday, September 7, for Labor Day. The holiday will change the trash collection schedule. Two council committees meet Tuesday, and applications are open for entry-level police officer testing October 17.

There will be no trash collection Monday. Customers whose regular trash day is Monday will instead have their trash collected Tuesday, September 8. Crews will collect both Monday and Tuesday routes that day. As always, trash should be out for collection no later than 6 a.m.; this will be especially important Tuesday as crews work two routes in one day.

City offices will reopen Tuesday.

Two council committees meet on Tuesday, September 8 at the Phil Gainer Community Center. The Personnel Committee meets at 1 p.m. Topics include compensation and classification, overtime, the proposed grievance policy, employment vacancies, and recruiting. The Rules & Ordinances Committee meets at 3:30 p.m. to discuss Council procedures, boards and commissions, animal-code enforcement, e-bikes and scooters, sidewalks, and other proposed policy and code changes.

Utility and in-city Fire & Rescue Fee bills mailed August 31 are due September 20.

The Elkins Police Department is accepting applications from certified and non-certified candidates for Police Civil Service testing on Saturday, October 17. Financial incentives are available for all new officers appointed to the department. Entry-level testing includes a physical fitness test, a written test, and interviews. Successful candidates will be placed on the civil service eligibility list for appointment as Elkins police officers. More information is available at https://cityofelkinswv.gov/police-recruiting.

Other current openings include Streets Worker II, Sanitation Driver, Sanitation Worker, Municipal Court Clerk, Chief of Police, and Water Technician I, II, or III. Application information is available at https://cityofelkinswv.gov/departments/human-resources/employment-opportunities/.
