City of Elkins Announces Search for New Chief of Police

ELKINS, W.Va. — July 13, 2026 — The City of Elkins is seeking a highly qualified and experienced law enforcement professional to serve as its next Chief of Police. This critical leadership position is responsible for the overall management, strategic direction, and operational effectiveness of the Elkins Police Department.

The ideal candidate will be a proven leader with the ability to balance administrative duties with field operations. The Chief of Police will oversee all aspects of the department, including personnel management, strategic planning, community relations, and budgeting.

“We are searching for a dynamic leader who can build upon the department’s strengths and foster a safe environment for our community,” said Mayor Jerry A. Marco. “The individual selected will be instrumental in continuing to build trust between our officers and the citizens of Elkins.”

The key responsibilities of the position include:

  • Leading the day-to-day operations of the police department, ensuring the efficient delivery of police services.
  • Supervising department personnel, including conducting performance evaluations and assigning duties.
  • Preparing and managing the department’s budget, focusing on resource allocation and cost-benefit analyses.
  • Coordinating with external agencies, civic organizations, and local leaders to identify and solve public safety issues.
  • Ensuring departmental compliance with all local, state, and federal laws, as well as maintaining necessary accreditations.
  • Performing essential police functions, including arresting suspects, testifying in court, and preparing cases.

Qualifications and Requirements:

The successful candidate will possess a strong combination of operational and administrative experience. Specific requirements include:

  • A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • A minimum of eight years of combined operational and administrative experience in a related law enforcement position.
  • Must be a certified West Virginia Law Enforcement Officer.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
