Davis & Elkins College RAs Train with EFD Ahead of Fall 2026 Semester
Elkins, WV, August 8, 2025: Today, resident assistants (RAs) at Davis & Elkins College (D&E) participated in hands-on fire safety training led by the Elkins Fire Department (EFD) as they prepare for new student check-in and orientation on Thursday, August 14.
With classes beginning Monday, August 18—and 275 new students arriving at D&E for the 2025-2026 academic year—EFD’s training equipped RAs with critical fire prevention skills, including proper fire extinguisher use.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, U.S. fire departments respond to more than 3,300 college housing fires annually, most involving cooking equipment.
EPD Chief Steve Himes emphasized the importance of preparedness: “Preventing fires starts with education. We’re proud to partner with Davis & Elkins to ensure student safety.”
The training underscores the growing partnership between the City of Elkins and the College, founded in 1904 and serving as a cornerstone of the community for decades. Tonight, the ties continue to strengthen as Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco joins RAs for a welcome dinner ahead of D&E’s move-in day.
