ELKINS, W.Va. — October 12, 2025 — The City of Elkins continues to ask residents to sign up for emergency alerts. Residents with mobile phones can receive important alerts including weather warnings and water outages. They will also receive reminders about changes to city services due to holidays. Sanitation Department Updates

The City’s Sanitation Department announces that for October 2025, the free monthly bulk item pickup (one large item, such as an appliance, TV, or mattress) schedule is as follows:

For October:

• Tuesday: Tuesday, October 14
• Wednesday: Wednesday, October 15
• Thursday: Thursday, October 23
• Friday: Friday, October 24

This free service is for ONE ITEM only, such as an appliance, TV, mattress, or piece of furniture.

To schedule and pay for a Special Trash Pickup, such as a truck bed- or dumpster-sized load, please call 304.636.1414, ext. 1437.

Operations Department Updates

Street sweeping ended on Thursday, October 2. Leaf collection starts on Monday, October 13. More information is here: https://cityofelkinswv.com/leaf-collection

The fire hydrant at Third Street and Kerens Ave. will be replaced on Tuesday, October 14. There’s a chance that corner will be closed to traffic.

Wilson Street will be closed between Railroad Ave. and Martin St. until Wednesday, October 15 for repairs.

Alternative Transportation Options

City Hall Business

The next Elkins City Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 16, at 7:00 p.m. The agenda is available here.

The following committees will meet this week:

• Municipal Properties: Monday, October 13, 11:00 a.m., at the Phil Gainer Community Center; the agenda includes discussing a plan for the city-owned property on Harrison Ave.
• Historic Landmarks Commission: Tuesday, October 14, 4:00 p.m. at the Darden House, 421 Davis Ave., Elkins; Agenda TBA.
• Special Committee Meeting: Wednesday, October 15, 1:00 p.m. at the Phil Gainer Community Center; the agenda includes the city attorney’s interpretation of provisions in state and city codes.

The City Hall building at 401 Davis Avenue has been closed for renovation since September 2024. Contractors are now working on a $4.1 million project to repair and prevent future damage from flooding; install modern HVAC systems; improve safety, accessibility, and security; and update and modernize workspaces.
