City Hall News: Week of September 13, 2026

Two council committees meet Monday, and Elkins City Council meets Thursday. September bulk pickup begins Monday, and utility and in-city Fire & Rescue Fee bills are due September 20.

The Municipal Properties Committee meets Monday at 11 a.m. at the Phil Gainer Community Center. The committee will discuss possible use downtown of traffic lights obtained from state Division of Highways replacement projects, the kickoff of the city’s wayfinding sign project with Mills Group, the downtown sound system, Ellis Avenue right-of-way improvements, and the proposed acquisition of property in Third Ward.

The Finance Committee meets Monday at 1 p.m. at the Phil Gainer Community Center. The agenda includes requests for $23,782 to demolish 119 Main Street and $40,818.42 for swiftwater rescue training and equipment.

Elkins City Council meets Thursday, September 17, at 7 p.m. at the Phil Gainer Community Center. Items on the agenda include the second reading of an ordinance transferring property to the Elkins Building Commission, an updated Freedom of Information Act request protocol with new provisions concerning electronic devices, and an electronic devices and messaging policy. The agenda may be updated through Tuesday.

September bulk pickup begins Monday, September 14. Monday-route customers will receive bulk pickup September 14; Tuesday-route customers, September 15; Wednesday-route customers, September 16; Thursday-route customers, September 24; and Friday-route customers, September 25.

Customers may dispose of one bulk item per month at no additional charge. Items should be placed curbside no later than 6 a.m. on the scheduled pickup day, even if regular household trash is collected in an alley. Utility and in-city Fire & Rescue Fee bills are due September 20.

The Elkins Police Department is accepting applications from certified and non-certified candidates for Police Civil Service testing on Saturday, October 17. Financial incentives are available for all new officers appointed to the department. Entry-level testing includes a physical fitness test, a written test, and interviews. Successful candidates will be placed on the civil service eligibility list for appointment as Elkins police officers. More information is available at https://cityofelkinswv.gov/police-recruiting.
