Elkins Planning Commission Seeks Resident Input for 2025 Comprehensive Plan
Elkins W. Va., February 14, 2024: The Elkins Planning Commission is working on the development of the 2025 Comprehensive Plan, a vital policy document that will guide the city’s growth and development for the next decade. As part of this process, residents are encouraged to share valuable feedback through a survey asking for input on what matters most to them in the community.
A comprehensive plan is a strategic roadmap that outlines the community’s vision and goals for various aspects of city life, including public safety, transportation, economic development, and land use. By gathering input from residents, business owners, and stakeholders, the Planning Commission aims to ensure that the plan reflects the diverse needs and priorities of the Elkins community.
The development of the 2015 Comprehensive Plan for Elkins was a collaborative effort that involved extensive research, public input, and deliberation among members of the Planning Commission. Guided by the expertise of legal and planning professionals, the commission worked diligently to draft a plan that addresses the city’s current challenges and future aspirations.
Legally, the creation of a comprehensive plan is not just a recommended practice, but a requirement mandated by West Virginia state law. Under Chapter 8A of the West Virginia Code, municipalities are obligated to adopt and regularly update comprehensive plans to guide zoning, land use, and development decisions. By adhering to these legal obligations, the City of Elkins ensures that its growth and development are guided by a coherent and inclusive vision that reflects the needs and desires of its residents, while also complying with statutory requirements.
The survey covers a range of topics, including land use preferences, transportation needs, and community priorities. Feedback gathered from the survey will inform the development of the comprehensive plan and help shape policies and initiatives that will impact the city’s future.
Residents of Elkins are encouraged to voice their opinions about the 2025 Comprehensive Plan by filling out the survey here:
