City of Elkins Showcases Career Opportunities at Middle School Career Fair

Elkins, WV, May 22, 2025: The City of Elkins connected with future workforce talent at Elkins Middle School’s annual career fair today, introducing students to the diverse roles that keep the city running. Employees from multiple departments—including fire, police, finance, operations, and the city clerk’s office—took turns engaging sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Throughout the day, department heads and staff employed by the City offered hands-on demonstrations and discussions about how their city works, and how they could possibly work for the city in a future career.

The City’s interactive displays featured firefighter gear, a wastewater treatment plant demonstration, and guides explaining how municipal services support Elkins’ 7,000 residents. Three sessions for sixth, seventh, and eight graders allowed students to explore careers alongside 25 other local organizations.

Elkins Fire Chief Steve Himes offered students demonstrations of the various equipment EFD firefighters use.

“Events like this help students see City Hall as more than a building—it’s a place where they could build a career,” said Executive Secretary Mikayla Goins, who works closely with Mayor Jerry A. Marco and City Clerk Sutton Stokes. “Whether they’re interested in public safety, infrastructure, or finance, there’s a path here for them.”

The City regularly participates in regional career fairs, including the recent Randolph County Job Fair and Elkins High School’s fall events.
