Elkins Welcomes Visitors to Augusta Heritage Center’s Summer 2026 Programs

ELKINS, W.Va. — July 6, 2026 — The City of Elkins, Mayor Jerry Marco, and the community welcome visitors who are here for the Augusta Heritage Center’s summer programs. The program starts this evening with Augusta’s Cajun, Creole & Classic Country Week.

Augusta dates back to 1973, when it started its efforts to preserve, present, and pass on traditional craft, dance, folklore, and song of Appalachia and other regions. Artists, students, and travelers of all backgrounds have ventured to Elkins to learn, perform, and connect with our community.

“Augusta is all about passing on living traditions, and this Cajun cooking class is proof that heritage tastes even better than it sounds. We’re not just learning techniques; we’re learning the stories behind every dish—the history, the people, and the music that goes with it,” said Elkins resident Jenn Wingerberg. “As someone who moved here through Ascend WV, this class has been among my favorite ways to connect with the kind of deep, roots-based culture that makes Elkins and Augusta so extraordinary.”

Much of Augusta’s programming requires registration; many events, however, are free or low cost. The entire calendar, including concerts and dances, may be viewed here: https://augustaartsandculture.org/events/.

Cajun, Creole & Classic Country Week continues through Friday, July 10. Blues Week runs from July 13-17; Old Time Week starts on July 20 and ends July 24; this year’s summer program concludes with a festival and crafts fair in Elkins City Park on Saturday, July 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
