Sign Permits

Most permanent and temporary signs in Elkins require a permit. This page explains the rules, exceptions, and how to apply.

What You Need to Know Before Installing a Sign

As of council’s adoption of an updated zoning code in August 2022, certain categories of signs (including billboards) are no longer permitted in Elkins. A permit is required prior to the display and installation of most permanent and temporary signs, with certain exceptions. Dilapidated and disused signs must be removed.

Exceptions are listed in zoning code section 21‑23. Contact the Code Enforcement Officer if you’re unsure whether your sign qualifies.

Sign Permit Application

Existing nonconforming signs in Elkins are “grandfathered,” but restrictions still apply.
