Regional Task Force Tackles Building Hazards, Expanded Recovery Services at June 2026 Meeting

ELKINS, W.Va. — June 29, 2026 — The Regional Task Force on Homelessness, Addiction, and Mental Health convened on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at the Phil Gainer Community Center. The monthly meeting brought together local officials and community partners to address ongoing challenges in North Central West Virginia. Dave Parker chaired the meeting.

Building Safety and Code Enforcement

Jessie Kittle issued a strong warning regarding the former Dr. Cordier building, advising residents that it should not be entered due to hazardous conditions. The building has been officially condemned. Additionally, two more vacant buildings are currently in the process of being sealed to prevent further unauthorized access and vandalism.

New and Expanding Treatment Facilities

Markie Jeffries reported that Mountain Path Recovery, an inpatient care facility for men, is set to open for clients in mid-July. Jeffries currently serves as the daytime PEER with the organization.

In neighboring Buckhannon, West Care has opened its doors and is now accepting clients.

Partner Updates and Service Announcements

Several organizations provided updates on upcoming events and available services:

• Our House: Announced the “Run for It: Race for Recovery” event in Parsons and “Save a Life Day,” both scheduled for September. The organization’s “Routes to Recovery” transportation project is also moving forward.
• United Way: Currently seeking donations of hygiene products to distribute to local schools before the start of the next academic year.
• YouthBuild: Has received a grant to continue its operations for an additional three years.
• Randolph County Housing Authority (RCHA): Reported that some housing vouchers are currently available.
• Catholic Charities: Announced the launch of its “Helping Hands” program, which provides financial relief for short-term disability cases.

New Initiative Proposed

A new idea was presented to establish a drop-in center that would serve as a safe area. The proposed center would offer laundry and shower facilities, a place to warm up canned food, and check-in services staffed by PEERs. The concept includes the potential to partner with a licensed behavioral health provider to enhance services.

The Task Force’s next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 23, 2026, 1:00 pm, at the Phil Gainer Community Center.
