Introducing Elkins’ #America250 Mascots: Sammy and Lynyrd
ELKINS, W.Va. — May 11, 2026 — Lynyrd, a handsome bald eagle, and Sammy, as in Uncle Sam, have already made their mark as Elkins’ #America250 mascots. So far, they’ve visited Davis & Elkins College, Ramps & Rails, Sutton (in honor of Elkins’ City Clerk), and Charleston to lobby the state legislature (unfortunately they don’t know the days of the week and showed up on a Saturday and this year’s session had already concluded).
Now they’re staying closer to home. Through July 4th, Elkins residents can schedule a time to pose with them for a photo.
A couple fun facts:
- Sammy likes chili hot dogs with coleslaw – but which style? Depends where in WV he happens to be.
- Lynyrd prefers salmon, plus the occasional frog from West Virginia’s rivers.
