International Day of Women and Girls in Science: Here Are D&E Students’ Perspectives

February 11 is International Day of Women and Girls in Science, first recognized ten years ago in February 2026.

So, what exactly does this day mean?

We went to the source and asked around the Davis & Elkins College (D&E) campus.

Here are some responses:

“There is something empowering about sitting in a quantum chemistry classroom full of all women. It feels impactful to see women taking up space in science.” – D&E sophomore chemistry student

“As president of the Chemistry Club, I love being able to witness the incredible impact of women in science. I’m proud to be included in an environment where these brilliant minds can push the boundaries of scientific discovery.” – D&E junior chemistry student

Here’s what a D&E professor had to say:

“I’m inspired every day by the women in my classes who challenge assumptions, push boundaries, and remind us why science needs diverse voices. I am so proud of their community outreach as they show young girls that women belong in science and that their voice and ideas matter.”

Worldwide, young women are more likely than young men to embark on higher education—46% of them enroll within five years of completing high school or secondary school, compared with approximately 40% of men—yet women make up 35% of science graduates.

Today, we wish these impressive young women at D&E the best of luck.
