Help First Responders Find You: Get Free Reflective Address Numbers
When first responders answer a 911 call, every second counts. In an emergency—whether it’s a fire or a medical crisis—quick identification of your home is critical. GPS isn’t always accurate, and if firefighters, police, or paramedics struggle to find your address, they lose precious time.
Help Our First Responders Find You
A simple step you can take is to ensure your home or business has clearly visible address numbers. For maximum visibility, Elkins first responders recommend numbers that are:
- At least four inches tall.
- Made of block letters (not cursive).
- High-contrast and reflective.
- Visible from the street in all weather conditions.
These address numbers should be placed by your front door or mailbox where they can be easily seen, day or night.
While these are items residents can easily purchase, we know every dollar counts. To help make our community safer, the City of Elkins has launched a pilot program offering free reflective address numbers to residents who need them.
How to Get Your Free Numbers
- Visit the Finance Office at the West Virginia Wood Technology Center (10 11th Street, Suite 3, Elkins, 26241).
- Come by during their business hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Provide your address to a staff member, and they will give you your set of numbers at no cost.
Please install them promptly on your mailbox, front door, or house facade—anywhere that is clearly visible from the street in all weather conditions, both day and night.
