New Community Coalition to Provide Warming Station Services

As winter temperatures drop and another large snowstorm approaches Elkins, we would like to let residents know about a vital community-led effort to provide temporary warming stations for residents in need during periods of extreme cold. 

Given the critical need for a safe, warm, and comfortable space for our most vulnerable residents, the Randolph County Warming Station will open its doors tomorrow, January 23. Its Facebook page launched this week, and we encourage you to “like” the page and share its posts. 

To support this initiative, the City entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the coalition in April 2025. Under this agreement, Elkins will provide $1,000 in funding to help reimburse approved operational expenses. 

This model of supporting established community organizations with available funding is a practical approach used across West Virginia. It allows municipalities to help empower local groups with direct experience and strong volunteer networks so they can manage these essential services safely and effectively. 

We encourage residents who wish to volunteer or donate supplies to connect directly with the coalition organizing the effort. The primary hub for information and coordination is their Facebook page. 

How You Can Help: 

  • Share Information: Helping to spread the word about this resource within our community is a valuable way for you to show your support. 

By combining community connections and Elkins’ volunteer spirit with our local resources, we can all ensure a caring, responsive approach to helping our neighbors during severe weather. 

Remember: If you are in a situation where extreme cold is life-threatening and you cannot access the warming station, call 911.
