Spring is Here! The Street Sweeper is Ready to Soon Give Elkins’ Streets Some Love, Starting April 13
Spring has officially begun in Elkins, and with it comes the familiar hum of our city street sweeper as it gets back to work each morning.
Starting Monday, April 13, Elkins residents will start seeing our sweeper out and about, tidying up our streets after the long winter.
Why do we do this? Street sweeping is more than improving our neighborhoods’ curb appeal (though a clean street does look nice). Regular sweeping helps protect our local infrastructure by reducing the amount of debris that ends up in our wastewater treatment plant, so it can keep running smoothly for years to come.
Here’s the important part: to make sure the sweeper can do its job effectively, we need your help clearing the way. The best practice is to just move your car or truck the night before. Your Alexa, Google Nest, or smartphone can help you remember to move your car the evening before, and again in the late afternoon or when you get home from work.
Enforcement of the parking rules begins Monday, April 20. From that point on, if your car or truck is parked on a street scheduled for sweeping, city police will ticket your vehicle.
How to stay in the know:
The sweeper runs Monday through Thursday, visiting each street once a week. The best way to avoid a ticket is to check our schedule and get into the weekly routine of moving your car the night before your street’s designated day.

A few friendly reminders:
- There has been no change from last year’s street sweeping schedule.
- Holidays: The City of Elkins’ Operations Department doesn’t sweep on public holidays. If a holiday falls on your street’s day, that service is simply canceled for the week.
- Rain or Shine: While we try to post updates when we can, sometimes the route gets cut short due to weather, mechanical issues, or emergencies. When in doubt, stick to your weekly routine of moving your car—it’s the safest bet!
Thank you in advance for doing your part to help keep Elkins beautiful and protect our city’s infrastructure.
